Does Summer Heat Damage Your Golf Cart Batteries?
By August, most of Florida is living somewhere between “hot” and “actively hostile,” and your golf cart batteries feel every degree of it. If you’ve noticed your cart losing range, charging strangely, or just feeling sluggish this time of year, heat is very likely the reason — and it affects different battery types in different ways.
What Heat Actually Does to a Battery
Heat speeds up chemical reactions. That sounds like it should make a battery perform better, and in small doses it can — but past a certain point, it accelerates the same reactions that cause batteries to wear out. Prolonged exposure to high heat shortens a battery’s usable life, increases water loss in lead-acid batteries, and can cause a battery to hold a false “full” charge that drops off fast once you’re actually driving.
Lead-Acid Batteries in the Heat
If your cart still runs on traditional lead-acid batteries, summer is genuinely hard on them. Heat accelerates water evaporation from each cell, which means batteries that aren’t topped off regularly can develop dry spots on the plates — a leading cause of permanent capacity loss. Charging a hot battery also produces more off-gassing, which is part of why it’s a bad idea to charge your cart in direct sun or inside a closed, unventilated shed on a 95-degree afternoon.
Rule of thumb for lead-acid owners in peak summer: check water levels more often than you think you need to, charge in shade or a ventilated space, and avoid letting the cart sit fully drained in the heat for long stretches.
Lithium Batteries in the Heat
Lithium (specifically LiFePO4, the chemistry used in most golf cart conversions) handles heat meaningfully better than lead-acid. It doesn’t require watering, it’s less prone to the capacity swings that come with extreme temperature, and a built-in battery management system (BMS) actively protects the cells from overheating and overcharging. That doesn’t mean lithium is bulletproof in the heat — extreme, sustained high temperatures can still shorten any battery’s long-term lifespan — but it’s a noticeably more forgiving option for a Florida driveway than lead-acid.
Practical Ways to Protect Your Battery This Summer
A few habits go a long way regardless of battery type: park in shade or under a carport when you can, avoid charging immediately after a hot afternoon drive (let the pack cool first), and don’t let the cart sit for weeks fully charged or fully dead in extreme heat — both extremes stress the cells.
